Stop translating in your head and learn to think and speak in English
Have you ever found yourself pausing mid-sentence in a business conversation, silently translating from Bulgarian to English? Well, you’re not alone. I find this is a common experience with English learners, especially in a professional context where clarity and speed matter. The truth is that translating in your head slows you down and often leads to awkward communication. To truly succeed in international business, you need to think in English.
At IH Sofia, we design business conversation classes that help you do exactly that, to train your brain to think in English, not just translate words. So, why is this so important?
Translation can create a communication gap. What I mean is, when you translate in real time, your brain has to process twice as much information, first understanding in Bulgarian, then decoding into English. This delay can lead to hesitations, misunderstandings and missed opportunities in meetings, negotiations and presentations. After all, time and clarity are critical, fluency isn’t just about grammar, it’s about confidence and speed.
When thinking in English, your accuracy improves. For instance, when you’re constantly translating, you’re more likely to choose direct word-for-word equivalences meaning idioms, tone and context may be lost. Thinking in English means you start to understand how the language works naturally, choosing the right phrases sounds more professional. I love this TED talk by Lýdia Machová who gives some great ideas on how to sound more fluent.
So, does this rely on talent? Well, I don’t really believe so. Learning a language fluently is a skill and like any skill it can be developed. Our IH Sofia business conversation classes, focus on immersive speaking tasks, realistic scenarios, building vocabulary and useful phrases. Instead of memorizing a textbook, you’ll practice pitching ideas, responding to clients concerns, participating in meetings and networking in English.
Our international teachers, design courses to build real world fluency by simulating real workplace communication. You roleplay business situations and conversations and get immediate feedback from your teacher – Essential. After all, focusing on industry-specific language, modern business etiquette and spontaneous conversation are skills that are essential in today’s global environment.
As importantly, confidence comes from knowing you can handle real conversations. The more you practice thinking in English, the more naturally your words will flow and the more your confidence will shine through in meetings, interviews and presentations.
So here are some things you can try:
- Shadowing is one of the most effective fluency-building techniques. Listen to a native English audio and repeat what you hear in real time. Make sure you mimic the pronunciation, rhythm and intonation. This helps your mind and mouth work together without pausing to translate.
- Make English part of your daily routine. Change phone and computer settings to English, write to do lists in English, write shopping lists and travel plans using simple English phrases.
- It’s really helpful to record yourself speaking English. Record yourself giving a presentation, explaining your job or answering interview questions. Then listen back and note where you hesitated or misused vocabulary. It’s a great way to self-correct and measure your progress.
- Before that important meeting or presentation, rehearse key phrases, introductions or responses in advance. Practising low-pressure business situations helps prepare for high-pressure ones.
- Surround yourself with English. Read articles, listen to the news and listen to podcasts. It may seem like an impenetrable language cloud to begin with but bit by bit the mist clears.
- Join an IH Sofia Business Conversation Course, of course.
